“The Construction of the Word” is a textile installation in which language is viewed as an unstable, fluid and ever-changing fabric that can be shaped by ideologies or by the contexts and geographic areas in which it is used. Not so much a fixed code as an ambiguous bodily process, it is always open to distortion and new interpretations. The piece is based on a single gesture: that of embroidering, without interruption, the word WORD – an open sign that can encompass any concept. Its visual and phonetic similarity to WORLD suggests that every word is also a world, reminding us that language both constructs and fragments the reality we inhabit, which in turn influences the meanings of words. Even though the gesture of embroidering is a corporeal continuum, the material dimension of the medium alters the form and legibility of the embroidered word, thus evidencing the mutability and instability of language. The creative processes involved are not concealed: the work shows the two sides of every surface, the threads tying different elements together, encouraging visitors to explore it from multiple angles. The suspended thread forms floating lines that represent the transition of language, its fragmented nature and its condition as a living entity.
