“A Texture Map of Monnegre River is a project developed by the artist Beatriz Freire (Portugal) through a two-month artistic research residency. During her stay, the artist proposes a sensory mapping of the Monnegre River, focusing on its visible and invisible textures. Inspired by A Sound Map of the Hudson River by Annea Lockwood, the residency does not aim for a conventional cartography, but rather a poetic and material exploration of the river landscape. Using techniques such as photography, analog film, frottage, and material collection, the project translates the river's traces — such as stones, sediments, vegetation, and flows — into graphic patterns and textile notations. In addition to the visual aspect, the project emphasizes soundscapes, captured using a recorder, contact microphone, and hydrophone, which are then transformed into textile codes through spectrogram software.
Ultimately, the goal is to generate a sensory archive that creates a bridge between sound, image, and matter, proposing new ways of reading and inhabiting the environment — decolonizing the senses and expanding forms of perception."
